Persuasive Essay
While you write a persuasive essay, you actually create a paper that will prove a point, which changes the reader’s opinion and clarifies any issue that prevails. The process that could actually change a person’s mind or thinking is always difficult as for doing that you need to have facts and explanations that has the power of convincing others. You have to then think very clearly about how you stand on the topic, plan your approach, use strong evidences, and understand the topic well at first only then you may be able to convince other people.
There are a number of ways in which you can choose a topic for your persuasive essay. Your teacher may however, give you a prompt or a choice to make among several prompts. You may even have to come up with a topic that is based on your own experiences or the text that you have been studying from. For instance, if you have a choice while selecting a topic, it would helpful it you select one that interests you the most. However, choosing a topic about which you have strong feelings, whether the feelings are positive or negative, is always the right choice to make. Once you decide a topic for yourself, you may then start taking the steps towards the writing of a persuasive essay:
Brainstorm: Use whichever method of brainstorming that works best for you, whether it is free writing, listing or clustering. Write down each and every thought that comes to you about the topic that you have chosen. Make sure you know where exactly you stand on the issue that you have chosen. You can even ask yourself questions, to make the topic more clear in your miFor Example, in an essay where you are trying to persuade the reader that Emily Dickinson was sane, you could write down some related ideas that are as follows:”
Was Emily Dickson sane? YES
Why? She wrote quite an intelligent poetry which clearly indicates that she cannot be insane.
In the essay, where you try to persuade your reader that Emily Dickinson was insane, you would however, take a similar approach, but with consequently very different results. Here is an example for you using free writing:
Emily Dickinson was insane. She wrote a crazy poetry indeed. She didn’t follow the rules. She lived in solitude and she didn’t want to see anyone.
Investigate: Talk to your classmates, friends, and teachers about the topic that you have chosen. Ask them what do they think about it after reading it? The responses that you get from these people will you an overall review of how they would, or anyone reading the paper would respond to the opinions that you have given in your paper. Talking about your ideas, and testing your own opinions, gives you a better clue of what you have to say to persuade the reader to your point of view.
Read: Try to learn as much as you can about the topic. Read all the biographical information that is available about the author, if you writing about a particular book written by that author. Also, read the critical material (summaries, essays, etc.) You may find lots of biographical and critical material online as well as in libraries.
Think: It may however, seem quite obvious, but you really need to think about the ways of how you could persuade your audience in a better way. Don’t ever insult your readers or insult their knowledge by writing in a way that portrays as if you know everything and the reader does not know anything. Always use calm, and a reasoning tone while writing. Rely solely on the logics (spelling out your argument for your readers). Don’t just rely on the emotions. Explain the reader why? Despite the other side of the argument, the viewpoint that you give should be “right”, and the most logical one out.
Organize: If you write any paper, be that a term paper, a research paper, a history paper, etc, you should always make sure that the points that you are writing are well organized and that the supporting ideas that you are giving are clear, concise and to-the-point. In persuasive writing, although it is especially important to give specific examples to illustrate the main points that you are giving out. Don’t let your reader think that you are not educated on the issues related to your topic or you are not sure of the details that you have given. Choose each and every word carefully in your writing.
