Do You Aspire to Become a Qualified Accountant?

Working as an accountant can provide substantial returns both in terms of money and personal satisfaction. Accountancy as a career can be quite exciting if you play your role well and rise up to the helm of affairs. It is not uncommon to see individuals who started their careers as accountants, eventually rise to the top positions of financial organizations like those involved in investment banking and stock broking. However the career of accountancy with its many requirements and regulations may appear to be quite intimidating to the uninitiated. But the requirements are not so complex that they cannot be unraveled through an organized approach. In this article we will try to do just that.

The first requirement towards developing a career as an accountant is to obtain relevant professional qualification. This is provided through a variety of certificates that are issued by accounting bodies of various countries around the world. These accounting bodies exist in the form of associations, societies and organizations and their primary goals include setting the standards of practice, as well as guarding the interests of accounting professionals. The certification issued by these bodies are their way of ensuring that only individuals who satisfy the required standards get to work professionally as accountants. The major accounting scandals in recent history involving the likes of Enron and WorldCom had major accounting bodies around the world enforcing standards that would ensure ethical practices in the field of accounting.

There are certain basic requirements that all aspiring accountants should satisfy. Firstly accounting requires very good mathematical and analytical skills. The function of accountants is not limited to recording daily transactions that take place in a business organization. They need to be able to study and analyze this data and present them in a format which would make them useful for critical managerial and financial decision making. Aspiring accountants should focus on taking up courses which are related to accounts and math as this would help them boost their skills. While in college it would help if they supplement their education with part-time accounting jobs. A critical factor that one should take into account is that the requirements of accounting bodies across the world and even in different states of the same country can vary. This makes it vital that the aspiring accountant should be clearly aware of the requirements of the state or country in which he/she intends to practice, and then go about satisfying those requirements.

Another viable option is taking an online degree in accounting. An online degree comes with certain advantages over a traditional degree. Paramount among them is the flexibility that they provide, those who study for online degrees can schedule their study time and classes according to their own convenience, and moreover these degrees are also cost-effective. They are ideal for working professionals and even full-time parents. But if you decide to pursue an online degree you should be aware that the Internet is chock-a-bloc with fraudulent educational websites. They offer a wide variety of courses and great facilities but after paying up and enrolling students realize that they have been duped as the certification provided by the institute is useless. To avoid such incidents, one should only enroll in reputed online schools and universities. An effective way of ensuring that you will not be duped is to check the accreditation of the school or university in which you plan to study.

Whether you plan to get your degree the traditional way or online, you have to remember that accounting as a career may not be suitable for everyone. You need to have a liking for the job which helps you enjoy the work and succeed.
