Get Working Right After You Graduate – Tertiary Vocational Education
To meet the demands of a dynamic and technologically advancing world, the economy requires its workforce (the students) to be prepared to work in a work environment that requires more than just scholarly education. There are a growing number of job opportunities in the entertainment, photography, music, performing arts, web designing, computers, animation and other such sectors that require specialized knowledge and skills.
Such courses teach students to work independently, cope with high-pressure work situations, and deal with problems and issues practically and effectively. Creative vocational education is thus being encouraged so that students can focus on their careers, right from the Bachelors level and can be self-employed. Tertiary vocational education is no longer considered secondary to the conventional careers in teaching, banking, law etc, but has come to stand in its own right. And students stand to benefit the most from this.
Since easy employment is the primary motive of tertiary vocational courses, you can put all your worries about what kind of work you will get, or which companies will hire you, to rest. Creative vocational education at the Bachelors level prepares you for a career immediately after you graduate.
- While you may not get very high paying, well-cushioned jobs in the beginning, the keyword in such courses is ‘experience’. Almost all vocational courses have a compulsory training or vocational period. Students are required to work with professionals and train under their supervision and it is very common to be offered a job with the company one has interned in. Since the trainee has already worked closely with the company, and knows what he is expected to do and how, they are given preference during recruitments, rather than an ‘outsider’.
- Placements are given a lot of importance in vocational courses. Placement cells actively invite companies and professionals to recruit students from their colleges and universities. Many also offer placement assistance so that the students are assured of jobs at the completion of their course.
- Freelancing and self-employment are other options that the students always have. The main objective of such courses is to make the students self-reliant and therefore entrepreneurship is highly encouraged. Web designing, music, photography, tourism and hospitality, animation, all provide tremendous scope, and there are enough job opportunities with the ever-burgeoning demand for such services.
- The option of sending your resume and copies of your work to potential employers and recruiters is always open to the students. Since the syllabus of creative vocational courses is such that it requires you to work on many projects independently and showcase your work, students with such an education will definitely be more suitable for jobs after their graduation, rather than students who have only been exposed to theoretical classroom education. Sending your designs to a fashion house, choreography or music videos to recording studios, photography to local newspapers is sure to land you a job interview in the least, whenever there is a vacancy.
Though the job opportunities after tertiary vocational courses may not put you in the big league immediately, or give you a fat pay cheque, but it definitely offers a lot of scope for progress and development. If you are talented, and showcase it well, there is no limit to the kind of money and fame you can earn.
