The verb in a sentence should agree with the right subject. In a long sentence, people tend to get confused on which noun that a verb should agree with. When this happens, reading the sentence many times would be of great help to identify the right subject.

The collective nouns are not plural. Collective nouns are nouns that refer things or peoples as a unit. Some examples of these are: family, police, class, team, crew and a company. When these collective nouns are inside the sentence, the verb that should be used is singular.

In order to determine what verb will be used in a sentence, the subject must be identified first. In general rule, the subject is usually immediate to the left of the verb. When the subjects are joined with “or” the verb should be in singular form. While the subjects connected with the word “and” requires plural form of the verb. When in doubt, just keep in mind that the verb agrees with the nearest subjects. The inclusive nouns should also be considered.
