When large companies take on many employees, it is understandable that a manager may feel intimidated at working with many people from different cultures, heterogeneous mixes and differing demographics. A lack of understanding of managing diverse teams can lead to a manager being far less effective at their job. Diversity training is a key component to inform people about diversity within the workplace. Training will help people learn how to communicate more profoundly in the future.

Although the training will never be able to remove all of the issues that arise it can increase awareness. The biggest goal of diversity training is to creative positive work environments that educates workers the differences among one another with tolerance. Successful diversity training aims to create acceptance within the workplace, allowing for individuals to retain all of their personal beliefs, values, ethics whilst appreciating that not everyone is a like in these views. Rather than prejudging other colleagues or feeling intimidated, employees are encouraged to accept the fact that there is diversity.

Diversity can appear in many different forms such as individual’s interests, values, physical and emotional characteristics. Training highlights how this does not have to effect the working environment, stopping productivity or creating conflict. Diversity can actually help a team within the workplace to attain goals and achievements that have been set in place.

Diversity training itself can be adapted to work with the many different working environments there are, and integrated into various management styles that different businesses may have. Highlighting the recognition and acceptance of diversity within the workplace is one way of dealing with what may have been a hostile environment to work within. This communication amongst colleagues will allow for them to feel that they can seek help from one another to complete tasks. This type of environment will be far more successful than one that does not make room for diversity.

Companies have found that the introduction of diversity training can increase productivity levels within the workplace quite significantly. One major achievement of this training is that successful diversity training seems to encourage the skills of competent workers that may have felt hindered by their race, gender or sexual orientation before the training. When these attributes no longer become an issue at work then individuals begin to feel far more valued and part of a team.

Creating a workplace that accepts diversity is not a simple process and will not happen overnight. But with the right diversity training and patience then it will eventually have a positive effect on the communication between employees and productivity of departments.
